The 24 books of Christmas

The boys are getting old enough to really get excited about Christmas. I’ve seen so many advent calendar ideas that I wanted to try to encourage their excitement, but I know that I just don’t have the time to plan, organize and get it done so, plan B….

I purchased 24 Christmas books.

Yes. I know, that in itself sounds like a lot of work AND money, but I actually partially did this last year. We started with 12 books and managed to read them throughout the month rather than one every night.  So this year I only needed another 12 books to make it happen. Most of the books are paperback and inexpensive, but I did splurge on some that looked good or that I remember from when I was little. After all, they are being read to three little boys and will be for numerous years. I figure I’ll get my money’s worth.

Once I had the books, I just wrapped them, numbered them and viola! Advent calendar.

Each night we will read one book. When the books are gone, Christmas is here!

The boys can hardly wait until tomorrow when they get to open their first book. I love that this is getting them excited about Christmas, but even better, I love how excited they get about books!

This photo has nothing to do with Christmas (other than Keaton looking like Cindy Lou Who from Whoville) or advent calendars. I just thought he was too cute not to share. Enjoy.

  5. Heather,

I did the same thing with my sons. Ironically, I was just thinking about it as I drove home this evening. Every year, we got the books out and put them in a basket. They got to choose a new one to read daily until we made our way through the basket to Twas the Night Before Christmas. Can’t wait to repeat it with grands one day!
